Industrial and Commercial Premises Protecting Our Waterways
Information on how Industrial and Commercial businesses can help protect our waterways.
This information sheet has been prepared to assist occupants of industrial and commercial premises in preventing pollution entering our waterways.
Stormwater run off enters creeks, lakes and rivers. One way to improve the water quality of these important water bodies is to prevent pollution entering the stormwater system.
Here are some ideas on how you can help:
- Ensure that the pollution controls on the premises you occupy are designed to prevent the discharge of waste to stormwater.
- When carrying out any washing activities, the run off should not enter stormwater drains. This includes washing or degreasing of cars, workshop floors, equipment and draining radiators etc. Such run off should be discharged to the sewer, with ACTEW approval.
- Where there is a grease trap, triple interceptor or coalescent plate separator on your premises, ensure that it is regularly maintained.
- Where oil, paints, liquid wastes or other substances are stored ensure that they are stored in a bunded, secured area.
- Liquid storage areas should have physical barrier around the perimeter to contain any leaks or spills.
- Clean up any spills immediately using dry absorbent materials and then dispose of appropriately.
- Keeping the premises tidy will help to minimise accidental discharge of wastes into stormwater.
- Ensure that all personnel employed on your premises can clearly identify the drains which enter the stormwater system.
REMEMBER, UNDER THE LEGISLATION IT IS AN OFFENCE TO DISCHARGE WASTES INTO WATERS WITH PENALTIES UP TO $50,000.00.
