Good Sports Territory

GOODSPORTS-logo

Introduction

The Good Sports Territory was developed to promote fair play and positive sporting behaviour on and off the field.

Too often we are confronted with alarming media reports or see people behaving badly at community sporting activities. Such behaviour rears its ugly head in many ways - participants abusing officials; spectators abusing officials, participants or other spectators; the “over-zealous” parent applying unwanted pressure on their child; and a ‘win at all cost’ attitude becoming prevalent. In the worst cases these behaviours have resulted in physical violence, severe injuries and/or criminal proceedings.

The Good Sports Territory aims to:

1.   Inform and educate the public on the importance of positive and acceptable behaviours in sport.
2.   Support organisations to implement strategies that deal with inappropriate behaviour at sporting activities at all levels; and
3.   Encourage organisations to recognise and reward individuals and teams that practice and display good sporting behaviour.

Through industry consultation five value statements were developed to assist in promoting the positive values and behaviours that we expect in sporting environments and competitions in the ACT. These five value statements are:

Enjoyment – for keeping the fun in sport;
Fairness – for playing fair and giving everyone a fair go;
Respect – for the players, officials and rules of the game;
Achievement – for doing our best rather than winning or losing; and
Thanks – for the people who make sport happen.

Good Sports Case Studies

Clubs and associations have a responsibility to provide fair and safe environments for those involved in sport whether they are players, coaches, officials or spectators. Developing and implementing policies and strategies that promote positive sporting behaviour has become an important part of the management of local sport and recreation organisations.

Many national sporting organisations already have policies in place to encourage harassment-free sport environments so they are a good place to start if you are considering implementing a new policy in your club or association. If they are not able to assist you a number of organisations from around the ACT are already successfully implementing strategies that promote positive behaviour and fair play in their activities. These case studies may assist you in developing your own ‘Good Sports’ program.

New case studies will be added regularly so watch this space...

How to get involved

Local clubs and associations can become part of the Good Sports Territory by actively working towards providing a safe and fun environment for all members. Clubs need to recognise that inappropriate behaviour does impact negatively on individuals, the club and the sport. By administrators, officials, coaches, players and spectators working together clubs can develop and implement strategies to promote positive behaviour and minimise poor behaviour, making sport enjoyable for all.

Educational resources to assist clubs are available here.

To help spread the Good Sports Territory message ACT clubs and associations can access promotional resources for use at their local venues and events. These resources will assist clubs to publicly promote the values and expected behaviours of the program and will demonstrate to the local community that as a club you are actively working towards providing a fun and safe sporting environment.

To register as a member of the Good Sports Territory please complete the registration form(Word  Word 25Kb). Clubs will receive a "Good Sports Territory Registration Pack" that contains:

  • "Team Good Sports" poster pack

  • Signage to display at your club,

  • Brochures to distribute to your members,

  • Promotional items to give away, and

  • Certificates to recognise individuals within your club that display positive sporting behaviour.

A full list of clubs committed to the Good Sports Territory program will soon be added to this website
