On 2 June, The Children’s Physical Activity Foundation announced its grant recipients for 2
008. Over $73,000 in grants will go to a total of 33 schools and 12 sport and recreation organisations.
Foundation board member and Canberra Capitals coach, Carrie Graf, highlighted the success of the Foundation grant program “We’re extremely pleased with both the quality of applications and the number of schools and sport and recreation organisations we’ve been able to support. The Foundation is a fantastic initiative which will provide many primary school aged children with the incentive and opportunity to become more physically active,” Ms Graf said.
The Foundation aims to promote active lifestyles for children by providing funding to schools for both teaching professional development opportunities and the procurement of sporting equipment.
“When I first heard about the Foundation I thought what a fantastic opportunity for children, and it’s certainly an initiative I am proud to be involved with” Ms Graf said. “Sedentary lifestyles can contribute to significant health issues within Australian society and so any program that gets children active has my full support.”
ACT Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation, Mr Andrew Barr, remarked on the success of the Foundation and the start of the Minister’s Challenge.
“As Patron of the Foundation it pleases me to see the number of ACT public and non government schools that have successfully obtained funding through the Foundation. These applications have ranged from badly needed equipment grants to fantastic physical activity initiatives incorporating fundamental core movement skills and the professional development of teachers.
“A number of sport and recreation organisations have also been successful in gaining funding to conduct physical activity programs in schools. The development of relationships between schools and external sporting providers will help to foster the relationship between school and weekend sport,” Mr Barr said.
“In conjunction with the grant announcements I’m also able to witness the start of the Minister’s Physical Activity Challenge. The Challenge is geared towards encouraging schools and participating school children to be physically active for up to an hour a day and is a challenge that I will join them in tackling over the next ten weeks.”
