Opinion Poll of ACT Residents on Kangaroo Management
In December 2011, Territory and Municipal Services commissioned a random telephone survey of 600 ACT residents to ascertain the opinions of ACT residents towards kangaroos and kangaroo management. It mirrors a survey carried out in 2008 during the preparation of the ACT Kangaroo Management Plan.
According to the results, Canberrans value kangaroos living in the Bush Capital and support kangaroo culling in certain circumstances. The results indicated that:
-
76% of respondents considered it important to have kangaroos in the ACT (compared to 82% in 2008)
-
76% of respondents correctly identified the eastern grey kangaroo as occurring in the ACT (compared to 73% in 2008)
-
79% of respondents supported kangaroo culling under certain circumstances (compared to 76% in 2008)
-
70% of respondents supported kangaroo culling to assist in the conservation of native grasslands (compared to 59% in 2008)
-
43% of respondents exhibit a high or very high level of concern regarding the risk of hitting kangaroos whilst driving (identical to 2008)
