Waterways Restoration Program

Project Update: Work has now commenced to poison and remove established Willows using recognised control techniques as part of the Waterways Restoration Program. Revegetation and habitat restoration will follow wherever tree removal occurs.

Debris removal commenced in October 2011 and continues following the large volumes of debris deposited in the floods of December 2010.

Project Background

The Waterways Restoration Program aims to cleanup Willow debris, remove and control Willows and undertake river restoration works in identified priority areas.

In late-2010 Canberra experienced significant storm events which resulted in the build up of Willow debris in our waterways and creeks. In response to these major storm events the ACT Government has invested $1.5 million toward the Waterways Restoration Program.

The Program will be carried out in three phases:

  • Clean up of heavy woody debris;
  • Willow removal and control along priority waterways; and
  • Rehabilitation of banks and in-stream.

Works across the different sites may be undertaken concurrently. For example, planting might occur at one site while willow control is undertaken at another.
