Haig Park - Tree Maintenance Activities – 2011 – 2012.

Territory and Municipal Services (TAMS) is the ACT Government agency responsible for the management of Canberra's urban trees. As part of routine tree maintenance activities, the condition of all 2500 trees located in Haig Park was recently assessed. This condition assessment identified a range of work including pruning, removal and replanting which is needed so the important Heritage valueand amenity of one of Canberra's oldest parks is retained.

The following questions provide information about the tree maintenance works

What's tree maintenance?

Tree maintenance is a broad term which includes pruning such as lifting, removal of trees that are dead, in decline, hazardous, ones that have been vandalised and replanting in sites where trees have been removed.

When's the tree maintenance work starting?

The tree maintenance activities are scheduled to commence in early August and the bulk of the tree removal work will be completed by the end the month. This will be followed by pruning and then replanting in autumn – winter 2012.

Will any trees be removed?

Unfortunately a number of trees that are dead, in decline (young and old), diseased, damaged, potentially hazardous, vandalised or significantly conflict with infrastructure require removal.

Trees that are identified for removal have been assessed by qualified arborists and their defects can't be improved through pruning.

How can I find out which trees are being removed?

Trees that are to be removed will either be identified by a small paint mark painted at the base of the tree or signposted prior to their removal.

Will the trees be replanted?

Replacement planting is expected to commence in autumn 2012 following endorsement of the Conservation Management Plan by the Heritage Council and completion of the Haig Park Master Plan, which is currently in the final consultation phase. Replacement plantings will be guided by the Conservation Management Plan and the Master Plan recommendations.

Will the same types of trees be replanted where ones have been removed?

Yes. Sites will be replanted with the same species of tree as the ones removed. Haig Park is a Heritage listed park and the trees are one on the ACT Tree Register and the planting theme won't be altered.

Will the whole tree be removed in the one day?

Depending on the size of the tree, the removal process generally takes place in three phases – the upper canopy is removed first, followed by the barrel (trunk), and finally the stump. However, it may take up to a month after the barrel has been cut for the stump to be fully removed.
