The Plantation Estate in the ACT managed by Parks Conservation and Lands
PCL Commercial Plantation Estate
The areas of Commercial Plantation estate in the ACT include the following;
- Kowen Forest – Area east of Canberra; 4671 ha of plantation area; approximately 30 unplanted; age ranges between 2-34 yrs; shales based soils; rainfall 450mm/yr; Mean Annual Increments* (MAI) of approx 12
- Uriarra Forest – Area west of Canberra, north of Cotter River; 651 ha of plantation area; approximately 756 ha unplanted; ages range from 2-5 yrs; 3490 ha in LCC unavailable for commercial forestry; red clay podzolic soil types; Rainfall 900 mm/yr; MAI 18-20
- Pierces Creek Forest - Area west of Canberra, south of Cotter River; 2323 ha of plantation area; approximately 408 ha unplanted; ages range from 2-5 yrs; 940 ha in LCC unavailable for commercial forestry; granite soil types; Rainfall <900 mm/yr; MAI <20
- Miowera Pines - Area south-west of Canberra, south east of Pierces Creek; 175Ha of plantation area; approximately 145 ha unplanted; age class 13 yrs; all outside the LCC
- Ingeldene Forest - Area south of Canberra; 485Ha of plantation area; all unplanted; all outside the LCC
- Tuggeranong Pines (Melrose Pines) - Area southeast of Tuggeranong; 32Ha of plantation area; age class 16 yrs; all outside the LCC
- Isaac Pines- Area east of O’Malley; 40Ha of plantation area; ages range from 10-53 yrs; all outside the LCC
- Fairbairn Pines - Area east of Canberra, adjacent to Speedway area; 54Ha of plantation area; age class 15 yrs; all outside the LCC; 189 Ha of additional plantation has recently been annexed off for the ADF to use as a military training area and will be unavailable for commercial forestry.
- Majura Forest - Area east of Canberra, adjacent to Mt Majura Nature Reserve; 93Ha of plantation area; all planted; ages range from 14-22 yrs.
*Mean Annual Increment refers to the average volume production per year of a tree planting of known age.
PCL Non-Commercial Plantation Estate
The areas of the Non-Commercial Plantation estate include the following;
- Uriarra Forest – inside the LCC; 3490 ha in LCC unavailable for commercial forestry; managed for the provision of clean water to Cotter Dam
- Pierces Creek Forest – inside the LCC; 940 ha in LCC unavailable for commercial forestry; managed for the provision of clean water to Cotter Dam
- Stromlo Forest – 2165 ha
- Fairbairn Pines – 189 ha of plantation has recently been annexed off for the Defence Force for use as a military training area and will be unavailable for commercial forestry.
- Block 60 or Jedbinbilla – 229 ha of plantation has been removed from the commercial area in 2004 to create a buffer to Tidbinbilla.
- Corin/Gibraltor Blocks - 495 ha of plantation has been removed from the commercial area in 2006 due to its immediate proximity to TNR and Namadgi National Park and as the hardwood regrowth was sufficient for non-invasive re-establishment.
- Giralang Pines, Fadden Pines, Westbourne Woods, Fyshwick Pines have always been part of the City Parks estate and are not considered as commercial plantings.
- Gungahlin Eucalypt and Lyneham Ridge Eucalypt Plantations, previously managed by ACT Forests are not considered commercial.
