Molonglo Reach Riparian Restoration
The Molonglo Reach Riparian Restoration project will restore the natural habitat of the area and protect wildlife.
The project will involve large scale removal of pest plant species, such as willows and blackberries, and revegetation using local native species to improve native wildlife habitat. The eroded shorelines will be repaired as well as the visual amenity of the area improved.
The shoreline vegetation is dominated by thickets of woody weed species which are declared pest plants under the ACT Pest Plants and Animals Act 2005. Blackberries and willow species, the dominant weed species along Molonglo Reach, are weeds of national significance and their removal is part of a nation-wide control effort.
The use of local species will be promoted in all revegetation works. Trees will be planted in clusters along the northern shoreline and the spacing of the trees will promote views of the river and the Jerrabomberra Wetlands beyond.
