Mulligans Flat Woodland Sanctuary

Mulligans Flat Nature Reserve closed for rabbit and hare control program

As part of an ongoing program to control rabbit and hare populations in Mulligans Flat Woodland Sanctuary, the reserve will be closed to the public from 1 am Wednesday 18 April 2012 to 8 pm Friday 20 April 2012.

This closure is necessary to allow for the successful and safe delivery of the program which follows on from previous control works.

The program will again involve a dog detection service coupled with shooting and phosphine gassing methods which will be undertaken by trained and highly qualified ACT Government rangers.

Notification signage will be placed at all public entrances to the reserve to alert people of the closure. Gates to the Sanctuary will also be locked to prevent access.

For more information about the closure please view the Question and Answer sheet.

Imagine walking through this place at dusk, the warm red glow of the sunset over the Brindabellas, the damp air filled with the aroma of chocolate lilies and eucalyptus. Suddenly the silence is broken by the soulful call of a Bush Stone Curlew. A rare Bettong appears nearby amongst the wildflowers and begins digging for food, and then you are surrounded by a family of Bettongs curious at the intruder. As darkness approaches you switch on a torch only to be amazed at tiny Bandicoots scurrying about searching for grubs and bugs. The woodland is teeming with life unseen in this place for nearly 100 years ... this is Mulligans Flat Woodlands Sanctuary!

Our Vision

The Mulligans Flat Woodlands Sanctuary is an outstanding example of box-gum woodland, that sustains the full range of woodland flora and fauna, provides excellent educational and eco-tourism opportunities and inspires a conservation ethic amongst Canberrans. The Mulligans Flat Woodlands Sanctuary is a key part of a broader vision to find innovative ways to protect and rehabilitate highly vulnerable box-gum woodland, that is iconic to Australia’s rural landscape, and to integrate conservation and sustainable development in the urban setting.
