Strategic Bushfire Management Plan for the ACT

Bushfire planning is undertaken by a range of agencies, land managers and residents in the ACT. The primary planning instrument is the Strategic Bushfire Management Plan for the ACT (SBMP) (External Link), prepared by the Emergency Services Agency under the Emergencies Act 2004.

The ACT SBMP establishes the basis and  framework for the efficient, effective and comprehensive management of fire and fire-related activities for protecting human life, property, assets and the environemnt.

The over-arching strategic objective is to minimise the likelihood of bushfires and their negative consequences and provide for:

  1. Bushfire hazard assessment and risk analysis;
  2. Bushfire prevention, including hazard reduction; and
  3. Agency and community preparation and response in relation to bushfires.

The SBMP is the mechanism to combine the elements needed to ensure balanced, effective and efficient fire management in the ACT.

To meet the requirements of the SBMP, the Territory and Municipal Services Directorate and Emergency Services Agency have prepared regonal  fire plans which provide a general overview of bushfire related land managemnet operations for the next ten years.  Using the  regional fire plans as a guide TAMS prepares an annual Bushfire Operations Plan (BOP) detailing works to be completed in each financial year.
