Childers Street Development

The ACT Government allocated $3.0 million in the 2008/2009 budget for the urban renewal of Childers Street, ‘Arts Heart’, precinct within City West.

Stage 3 works to complete the Childers Street Precinct are underway. This work continues to realise the vision of the City West Masterplan and the Canberra central program, to revitalise the City West Precinct and better integrate the Australian National University campus with the City.

This next stage of work will see the improvement of verge treatments for all pedestrians on Hutton and Allsop Streets, together with the transformation of the vacant space on the corner of Rudd and Marcus Clarke Streets to a public urban park.

The 22 trees that are dead or in poor health will be removed and the area revamped to create a more inviting public park. The new public park will include the planting of trees, grassing, planting beds, paving, lighting and park benches, to provide a more usable and vibrant green space within the City.

This proposal also dovetails with the Urban Forest Renewal Program, which is planning a renewal strategy to enhance the City in the landscape image for which Canberra is renowned.
