Playground safety program

Parks and City Services has an ongoing renewal process of existing playgrounds. This process is managed through a Playground Safety Program and is predominately based on safety assessments.

All ACT playgrounds were designed and built in line with Australian and ACT Standards for playgrounds in effect at the time of building. Playgrounds are checked regularly to make sure they are safe and comply with current standards. Some older playgrounds no longer meet the current Australian Standards. A playgrounds’ design contributes greatly to how it meets safety standards. A style of playground installed in the late 1980s had many elements that no longer meet current Australian Standards. These elements are now judged as high risk and when funds are available, the playgrounds with these elements are replaced before others.

Parks and City Services staff are also finalising a Play Space Strategy that will enable more effective management, distribution, maintenance and provision of ACT public play spaces. The strategy implementation will re-examine play space distribution based on user need, current and projected demography, changing social practices, access and the potential for links with other community facilities. As each play space moves higher on the list for renewal, the opportunity for relocation, in line with the draft Play Space Strategy, will be investigated.
