Mowing Frequency

Canberra's mowing program is in accordance with the service levels contained in the table below 

Asset Type Frequency of Mowing
Irrigated grass in town and district parks
Every one to two weeks
Sports grounds
Twice weekly
Dryland grass in suburbs
Monthly during peak growth and two
to three monthly during the rest of the year

Key facts about mowing program

  • The ACT Government is responsible for mowing more than 5000 hectares (equivalent to 5,000 football fields) of irrigated and non-irrigated grass in urban open space and at the urban edge.
  • The ACT Government has a base mowing fleet of 78 mowers, comprising 54 internal and 24 contract mowers. Twenty-nine of the government owned mowers have recently been replaced with new leased mowers. Additional contract mowers are also employed throughout the mowing season.
  • The ACT Government’s Fire Management Unit is monitoring fuel loads across the Territory and prioritising work accordingly. Programmed works include hazard reduction burns, mowing, slashing and even grazing to reduce fuel loads.
  • Public safety with fire fuel reduction and line of sight along roads remains a priority.
  • Residents are reminded that they are responsible for mowing the nature strip that adjoins their property.
  • The ACT Government appreciates people’s patience while the mowing program takes place.
