Civic Accessibility Study

The Civic Accessibility Study was commissioned in 2001 to determine how access to public places in Canberra's City centre could be improved. It was reviewed and updated in 2004. Accessibility includes people with disabilities, those who are frail and/or aged, people with young children and people from Non-English Speaking Background. The study is divided in four sections: Study Report, Access Audit, Access Guidelines and Action Plan.

Access Guidelines were formulated to assist designers and authorities responsible for developing public place infrastructure. Best practice procedures and requirements for accessibility under the Building Code of Austalia and Australian Standards are provided in the guidelines. Illustrations of appropriately designed spaces are also included to show how design principles for accessibility can be sucessfully applied. Although the guidelines were developed for the City centre, they are applicable to the design of other urban areas.

To obtain other sections of the study please call Canberra Connect on 13 22 81.
