Living with Wild Dogs in Namadgi National Park

Environment and Recreation

Wild dogs remote from rural settlement serve a necessary role as a top order predator in natural ecosystems. In order to protect livestock, control of wild dogs is undertaken in areas of Namadgi that adjoin rural properties.

Incidents of wild dogs in Namadgi National Park interacting with people are extremely rare. However, it is sensible to take precautions to discourage these animals from gradually becoming less feaful of humans.

Observe the Following Advice When Visiting the Park

Never feed wild dogs, even indirectly. Wild dogs may become accustomed to people if visitors are not careful with food scraps and stores, so:

  • never offer food to wild dogs;
  • lock up your food stores, packs and eskies; and
  • pack away and carry out all of your food scraps and rubbish, including fruit and vegetable matter.

If you encounter a wild dog, keep yourself safe by observing the following:

  • always stay near you children;
  • walk in groups; and
  • watch dogs quietly from a distance—do not excite or coax them.

If you feel threatened by a a wild dog:

  • stand up at your full height;
  • face the dog;
  • fold your arms and keep eye contact; and
  • slowly back away.

Do not run or wave your arms

Report any incidents concerning wild dogs to the Namadgi Visitor Centre on (02) 6207 2900.
