ACT Weeds Strategy

ACT Weeds Strategy: A 10 year strategy for implementing a co-ordinated program for controlling weeds in the ACT
Weed control in the ACT in the past has been undertaken by agencies with land management responsibilities and individual land managers according to local priorities and resources. The result has been a diffuse effort which often failed to recognise the influence of weed problems on neighbouring land on the success of the program.
Although weed control legislation existed its application was cumbersome, and there was very little compliance from either government or private land managers.
The ACT Weeds Strategy has been developed to provide a process for enabling effective and efficient weed control to take place.
It has utilised existing information, such as the comprehensive survey of environmental weeds undertaken in 1995 by Berry and Mulvaney, as well as the Paddys River Catchment weed survey. The final Strategy document has been developed from a number of sources, including:
- the Draft Weeds Strategy (which involved extensive consultation);
- a Public Forum (to continue the consultative process in the development of the final Strategy);
- the legislative framework (to reflect recent changes, such as the repeal of the Noxious Weeds Act); and
- community concerns about the weeds issue in the ACT and surrounding region.
