Feral Animal Control
Feral animal control is vital to the success of the Mulligans Flat Woodlands Sanctuary project. Feral animals to be controlled include European Foxes, Domestic Cats, Hares and Rabbits. Foxes and Cats are very capable feral predators upon native wildlife in Australia.
At Mulligans Flat we monitor the presence of these ferals utilising a range of techniques such as night spotlighting, remote camera monitoring and setting up sand pads to detect footprints of passing animals. During the feral monitoring process it is essential for Rangers to know how to detect feral animals within the Sanctuary. We will set up several wildlife monitoring cameras adjacent to feed stations. When foxes or cats are comfortable visiting the feed station the free feed is baited with an approved poison such as 'Pindone' or '1080'.
The following photographs and video will further explain these techniques.
- Video - Download this short 30 second Fox Film (5Mb) to see just how wary foxes are when lured into the camera zone with a rabbit carcass, a favourite food. The film was taken in late December 2008.
