Mulligans Flat Woodland Sanctuary
Our Story | What's Happening? | Location | Photo Gallery | Research | Feral Animal Control | Contact
Imagine walking through this place at dusk…… the warm red glow of the sunset over the Brindabellas. The damp air is filled with the aroma of chocolate lilies and eucalyptus. Suddenly the silence is broken by the soulful call of a Bush Stone Curlew. A rare Bettong appears nearby amongst the wildflowers, it begins digging for food. Then you are surrounded by a family of Bettongs curious at the intruder. As darkness approaches you switch on a torch only to be amazed at tiny Bandicoots scurrying about searching for grubs and bugs. The woodland is teeming with life unseen in this place for nearly 100 years....this is Mulligans Flat Woodlands Sanctuary.
Our Vision
The Mulligans Flat Woodlands Sanctuary is an outstanding example of box-gum woodland, that sustains the full range of woodland flora and fauna, provides excellent educational and eco-tourism opportunities and inspires a conservation ethic amongst Canberrans. The Mulligans Flat Woodlands Sanctuary is a key part of a broader vision to find innovative ways to protect and rehabilitate highly vulnerable box-gum woodland, that is iconic to Australia’s rural landscape, and to integrate conservation and sustainable development in the urban setting.
Walks and Talks
The Rangers are planning to hold regular events at the Sanctuary, but at the moment that are rather busy supervising the tree pruning contractors, ordering materials and doing lead up work for the tendering process and construction of the fence. Watch this space for future activities!
- Mulligans Flat Nature Reserve Ranger Guided Walks are not planned in December 2008 or January 2009 as fence construction and feral animal works is taking all our time.
