Traffic Control Devices, signs and linemarking

This page contains information on traffic control devices, signs and linemarking.

What are Traffic Control Devices (TCDs)?

Traffic control devices are

  • signs;
  • traffic lights;
  • pavement markings;
  • concrete median islands; or
  • other installations placed for the purpose of regulating, warning or guiding road users.

They may contain instructions that the road user is required to follow, warn of impending hazards in road layout or provide information about routes, directions, destination and sites of interest.

Maintenance of signage and linemarking

The maintenance of signs and lines is prioritised according to function and the condition of disrepair or defect. Roughly, prioritisation is as follows:

  • Priority 1: Signs and lines that need to be in place to enable legislation to be enforced. Stop signs, pedestrian crossing markings, school zone signs and parking control signs.
  • Priority 2: Signs and lines that provide drivers and road users with a warning of potential safety threats and hazardous conditions.
  • Priority 3: Signs and lines that provide guidance to road users negotiating their way around the road system.
  • Maintenance priority is also given to tourist areas and to signs and lines along the main approach routes into the ACT.

Lodge a feedback form

Day to day maintenance of signs and lines is performed in response to inspections by our service provider.
