Driveways

This page contains information on driveways and what to do if you want to construct a new, or alter or modify your existing driveway.

Driveways are typically located on territory land. It is generally the case then that driveways meet specifications established by Roads ACT. These specifications are intended to ensure the safety and serviceability of the driveway.

If you are constructing or modifying a driveway you will need to obtain approval from the Department Of Territory and Municipal Services Asset Acceptance section (TAMS AA) located at Macarthur House 12 Wattle Street Lyneham ACT.

Driveway Alterations and Additions

If you are building a new commercial or residential driveway, or if you are modifying a commercial or residential driveway you will need permission to do so from TAMS AA. Further, any modifications you make must meet the specifications outlined below and in the attached pamphlets, Design Standards and plans.

Before you start construction or modification you should submit a copy of your block plan overlain with the location of the proposed driveway works to TAMS AA. Please make sure that the block plan includes your property boundary, the road kerb line fronting your property, the location of any trees and the location of any services, such as stormwater sumps, light poles, transformers and etc.

The following check list and information will help you locate and design your driveway construction or modification.

The driveway must be:

  • Outside the dripline of old or mature trees
  • A minimum of 3 m clear of small and new trees
  • 1.2 m clear of sumps and other services,
  • 1.5 m clear of transformers, mini pillars and street lights
  • 6 metres clear of Tangent Point (TP) or corner block,
  • On a site with a proposed uphill grade less than 17%,
  • On a site with a proposed downhill grade less than 12%, and
  • At a right angle to the kerb line (max 1:10 deviation)
  • All concrete is to be Grade 32 (32 Mpa)
  • Driveways are NOT to be constructed using "exposed aggregate"
  • Footpaths are to take precedence over the driveway and are to remain continuous
  • You must also ensure that you are not making any alterations to a nominated heritage site.

We have attached the following pamphlets, Design Standards and plans for your convenience:

Once approval for alterations to your driveway has been given you will be contacted by TAMS AA. You are then permitted to proceed with your work to the sub-base or form-work stage (before concrete or pavers have been put in place). At this point the driveway will need to be inspected by either an independent engineer or an officer from TAMS AA
