Road Network Improvements
Questions and Answers
Why are all these works taking place at the same time?
These works form part of the 2009/10 Capital Works program which represents the largest program of road works in one year since self government commenced - not all the works will be done together as they are at various stages in their construction but many will overlap over the next 12 months.
What measures have been taken to minimise traffic disruptions?
Conditions are included in the traffic management approval in terms of when work on main roads can take place. Restrictions will apply during the peak periods and where it is practical and safe work will also be undertaken at night time and during the weekend to minimise the impact on normal week day traffic flow.
Does Roads ACT coordinate works with the National Capital Authority?
Roads ACT meet regularly with the NCA to discuss requirements to manage the traffic impact of road work sites. The current work at Kings Avenue and Morshead Drive is an example where Roads ACT and the NCA meet on a monthly basis to monitor the arrangements and make any necessary adjustments to minimise the impact on traffic and public transport/taxis.
How long until the roads are back to normal?
The current high level of road works will be in place over the next 12 months.
What is the ultimate outcome of all these road works?
Improved travel and safety conditions for the Canberra community.
Did the ACT Government do any consultation regarding the works?
Before planning major road works the ACT Government consults with the community including businesses, residents, etc. The ACT Government consults on the individual projects but not on the actual traffic management conditions associated with each project.
