The Lanyon Drive duplication is a joint project funded by the Federal, NSW and ACT Governments.
It is designed to improve traffic safety, congestion and improve travel times between Canberra and Queanbeyan, while also providing cycle lanes in each direction.
Construction of Stage 1 of the duplication from the Monaro Highway to Sheppard Street was completed last year.
Work has now commenced on the duplication of the 1.4 kilometre section from Sheppard Street in the ACT to Tompsitt Drive in NSW.
This project will involve the widening and strenghening of the Jerrabomberra Creek bridge, as well as replacing the Letchworth Railway bridge.

Lanyon Drive is a busy arterial road that provides access to Queanbeyan, to the Monaro Highway and Hume Industrial area. The proposed improvements will:
- Reduce peak hour delays and queuing at the intersections of Lanyon Drive and the Monaro Highway;
- Reduce vehicle operating costs and improved traffic flows between Queanbeyan and the ACT;
- Improve road safety;
- Retain the capacity for a future interchange at the intersection of the Monaro Highway (southbound) and Lanyon Drive;
- Reduce environmental impacts;
- Lessen impacts on traffic during construction.
The primary objective of this project is to improve traffic flows and safety along Lanyon Drive. The key features of the project include:
- The provision of additional lanes in each direction from Sheppard Street to Tompsitt Drive;
- Widening and strengthening of the Jerrabomberra Creek bridge
- Demolishing and reconstructing the Letchworth Railway bridge
