Hackett Traffic Changes
Brief Project Background
The Increase of traffic which Hackett is experiencing stems from the expanding growth in Gungahlin and from the commercial demands at Canberra Airport.
A safety audit was conducted in Hackett and as a result, various safety and performance issues were identified in this area.
It has been noted that currently there are a number of issues which are contributing to potential accidents at the intersection of Phillip and Majura Avenues. To overcome this, a signalised intersection will be installed to amend the safety issues.
Additionally, speed humps will be installed on Knox and Madigan Streets and two sets of pedestrian signals will be placed on Antill Street.
The contract for the construction of these works was awarded to Ward Civil and Environmental Engineering Pty Ltd for a value of $1.4 million.
As part of the construction contract for the installation of the signalised pedestrian crossings on Antill Street and Phillip Avenue, the contractor is required to provide safe pedestrian access around the construction site. Pedestrian access is to be maintained and alternative routes signposted if detours are required.
The construction program was delayed for approximately four weeks following the discovery of an unidentified cable under the intersection when the contractor was excavating. The cable was a brand new telecommunications line which required relocation by the service provider who was unable to complete the work immediately.
Construction was completed in February 2012.
