Cotter Road Duplication – Stage 1 Works

Brief Project Background
A project/Major Works to duplicate the Cotter Road between the Tuggeranong Parkway and Adelaide Avenue has arisen due to the study taken place in 2010 regarding the East West Corridor.
As a result of the study, it has been recommended that a number of improvements be made to allow the corridor to cope with the predicted increase of traffic, a consequence from the developments in Molonglo Valley and North Canberra.
Works to Cotter Road will be broken into two stages. Stage 1 works will be between Dunrossil Drive and Yarralumla Creek Bridge, while stage 2 works will be west of Yarralulmla Creek Bridge towards the Tuggeranong Parkway and includes duplication of the bridge.
Additional lanes will be added on both east and west sides of Cotter Road to allow easier turns into Lady Denman Drive, McCulloch Street and Dunrossil Drive. Bus priority and cycle lanes have been included in the upgrade as well as a signalised tee intersection that replaces the current three legged round about at the Cotter Road and Lady Denman Drive intersection. The introduction of traffic calming measures along McCulloch Street from the intersection with Cotter Road to the Curruthers Street roundabout will also be examined.
$6.5m has been allocated for the design, construction and construction supervision of the Stage 1 works between Dunrossil Drive and Yarralumla Creek Bridge this financial year, 2011 – 12. The completion date has been set for the end of October, 2012. Approval will be sought to commence Stage 2 works in the next financial year.
Stage 1 works commenced with the award of the forward design and construction superintendence work to SMEC Australia Pty Ltd in September 2011. The forward design work and consultation with ACTPLA, NCA and key stakeholders is in progress.
