Community Paths
General Information
Roads ACT manage and maintain the ACT's community path network.
The development of the cycling network, in particular, is based on ACT and federal transport, bicycle and safety strategies.
Cycling and walking are to be encouraged as modes of transport as they :
- Enhance fitness, health and general life enjoyment;
- Reduce traffic congestion and greenhouse gas emissions, and
- Reduce public expenditure on new roads and car parking facilities.
Roads ACT are responsible for the enhancement and development of cycle and pedestrian paths in established areas. Environment and Recreation, and the Planning and Land Authority (ACTPLA) are responsible for developing paths in older areas. Roads ACT, ACTPLA and Environment and Recreation liaise with Pedal Power ACT to promote commuter cycling and to develop a safe and effective network of cyclepaths.
Lake Paths
The major lakes around Canberra i.e. Lake Burley Griffin, (

PDF 779Kb) provide a recreational facility for many people. Paths around these lakes allow access to walkers and cyclists. Urban Services receive many requests about the distance of these paths. These maps have been derived to answer those queries.
Shopping Area Pavements
Roads ACT are responsible for maintaining the condition of pavements in all shopping areas. If you are concerned about the condition of a pavement you can contact us or lodge a feedback form. If you want to hold a stall at a municipal shopping centre you will need to contact Justice and Community Safety
for information.

On a day to day basis Roads ACT sweep and repair cyclepaths and their associated traffic control devices, such as signs, lines and guardrails. Prioritisation of maintenance is based on usage rates of sections of the network, usually this coincides with proximity to urban centres. The footpath network is not routinely maintained, consequently members of the public are relied on as the sole source of information about the condition of the network. Please lodge a feedback form.
Contact us if you would like to supply Roads ACT with information about the condition of either network.
