Nightlink Taxi Service

What is Nightlink?

Nightlink taxi service is a new way to get people home from Civic late on Friday and Saturday nights.  Nightlink is designed specifically to get people who have taken part in city nightlife, home quickly and safely.

Larger taxi vehicles capable of seating at least five passengers will be used to carry people travelling in the same direction in a 'ride sharing' arrangement.

The Nightlink taxi service is an 'on-demand' service that cannot be pre-booked.

This innovative taxi service has been developed by the Department of Territory and Municipal Services in partnership with Aerial Consolidated Transport and the Australian Hotels Association of the ACT.

Who can use Nightlink?

The Nightlink taxi service is ideal for patrons who are happy to share a taxi with other people travelling in the same general direction.  Just go to the Nightlink rank and report to the taxi rank marshal who will arrange your trip.  The taxi's route is determined by the location of the drop-off points requested by passengers, with the driver deviating from major roads only to drop passengers at their door.

While the Nightlink taxi service accommodates both single passengers and couples (or pairs of passengers), it is not a personalised taxi service.  If single passengers and couples wish to use the Nightlink taxi service they will be required to wait until other passengers going in the same general direction are organised by the marshal to share the taxi.

Frequently Asked Questions

If I'm travelling with a friend to separate locations, will we be charged the small group fare?

No, the small group fare only applies when two people travel to a single set down point.  You would each be required to pay the "one person travelling to one set down point" fare.

How will bad behaviour at the rank be dealt with?

Abusive or inappropriate behaviour toward taxi rank marshals, security guards or patrons waiting in a security taxi rank queue will not be tolerated.  People who behave in this manner will be asked to move away from the rank and police will be called in cases of continuing abusive or inappropriate behaviour.

Do I have to share a Nightlink taxi with others?

While the Nightlink taxi service accommodates both single passengers and couples (or pairs of passengers), it is not a personalised taxi service.  If single passengers and couples wish to use the Nightlink taxi service they will be required to wait until other passengers going in the same general direction are organised by the marshal to share the taxi.

Will the regular taxi rank function during Nightlink service times?

Yes, the Alinga and Bunda Street taxi ranks will function as normal.

Can I pay my fare by credit card or eftpos?

No, Nightlink is a cash only service.  Locations of ATMS around Civic. (PDF PDF  52Kb)

Can my friends and I travel together if we are travelling to different zones?

As long as you are travelling in the same direction you may travel with friends.  However, groups of passengers who are not travelling to the same set down point will be required to individually pay the "one person travelling to one set down point" fare.

Do I board the first available Nightlink taxi if I am at the front of the queue?

No, taxi marshals will organise those waiting in the queue into groups of passengers travelling in the same direction.  This means you may have to board a Nightlink taxi other than the first available.

What is the role of a taxi rank marshal?

The role of a taxi rank marshal is to organise patrons into groups of passengers travelling in the same direction.  The marshal then arranges trips according to the locations of passenger set down points.

How do I identify a taxi rank marshal?

Taxi rank marshals can be identified by their high visibility jackets with "Nightlink Marshal" clearly marked on the back.
