Hire Car Accreditation

The Road Transport (Public Passenger Services) Act 2001 and regulations made under it permit the Road Transport Authority to accredit a Hire Car Service Operator or a Restricted Hire Car Service Operator if satisfied that the operator can comply with the requirements of the Road Transport (Public Passenger Services) Regulation 2002.

Leased Hire Car Licences

Under the Road Transport (Public Passenger) Regulation 2002, all vehicles used as a Hire Car must be appropriately licensed under section 165(1)(a).

A person wishing to operate a Hire Car must become accredited and obtain a Leased Hire Car Licence. To obtain a Leased Hire Car Licence the following requirements must be met:

• complete all sections of the Application for a Leased Hire Car Licence form (attached below);
• make an appointment with Road Transport for the issue of a Leased Hire Car Licence (please call 6207 1423);
• on attending Road Transport the following documents must be supplied:
  • an application form;
  • a copy of the vehicle's current registration certificate;
  • a current public vehicle policy insurance certificate;
  • a passed inspection report from Road User Services indicating that the wheelbase measurement is at least 2800mm; and
  • a copy of the driver's licence for each applicant.
• pay the determined fee of $4600 per annum or $1150 per quarter. ONLY CHEQUE, MONEY ORDER OR CREDIT CARD (MASTERCARD & VISA) ACCEPTED.

Restricted Hire Car Licences

Under the Road Transport (Public Passenger) Regulation 2002, all vehicles used as a Restricted Hire Car for weddings and school formals must be appropriately licensed under section 165(1)(b).

A person wishing to operate a Restricted Hire Car must become accredited and obtain a Restricted Hire Car Licence. To obtain a Restricted Hire Car Licence for weddings and school formals the following requirements must be met:

• complete all sections of the Application for a Restricted Hire Car Licence form (attached below);
• make an appointment with Road Transport for the issue of a Restricted Hire Car Licence (please call 6207 1423 or 6207 6259);
• on attending Road Transport the following documents must be supplied:
  • application form;
  • current copy of the vehicle's registration certificate; and
  • a copy of the driver's licence for each applicant.
• pay the determined fee of $25.00. ONLY CHEQUE MONEY ORDER OR CREDIT CARD (MASTERCARD & VISA) ACCEPTED.
