ACT Light Rail submission to Infrastructure Australia

Light Rail Image

ACT Chief Minister and Minister for Transport, Jon Stanhope, released the ACT’s light rail submission to Infrastructure Australia to the public on Thursday 9 April, in anticipation of announcements from the Commonwealth Government about which major infrastructure projects will be funded from the Building Australia Fund. Light rail was one of nine projects the Territory submitted to Infrastructure Australia, and was included in December 2009 on IA’s ‘longlist’ of projects that may attract Building Australia funding.

The analysis of light rail undertaken by PricewaterhouseCoopers for the ACT Government indicates that a light rail system in Canberra could maximise transport accessibility, improve the efficiency of the ACT’s transport system, and minimise the social and environmental impacts of transport. Light rail would provide opportunities to make Canberra more sustainable by increasing greener transport choices, reducing car reliance and encouraging a more sustainable urban form built around transit corridors.
