Plant Issue Scheme

If you have purchased a brand new residential block of land in the ACT you are entitled to an allocation of plants from the Yarralumla Nursery.

The ACT Government provides these plants to help you beautify your new home and your suburb. There is no further cost to the householder. Below are our most frequently asked questions.

Plant Issue Scheme History

The Plant Issue Scheme was started to help turn Canberra into a Garden City. It was hoped that private citizens would take advantage of the free availability of plants to create their own gardens. By controlling the species available, the planners wanted to create a link between the public landscapes of the city and private gardens.

The Plant Issue Scheme started in 1930 with no limit on the number of plants issued for free. It was modified in 1956 to limit leaseholders to 20 trees and 60 shrubs. This was reduced in 1960 to 10 trees and 40 shrubs. The issue scheme was stopped for political reasons in 1979 but was reinstated in 1981. Currently, plant issue is available to every new block of leasehold land in the ACT.

Please either e-mail or phone our Garden Centre on 6207 2444 for the present issue size.

Am I Eligible For An Allocation?

The allocation of trees and shrubs may be collected at any time up to two years from the date of signing the land purchase agreement. This eligibility is transferable if the land is sold during this period. For allocation to newly completed government owned homes, tenants should contact the Housing trust.
