ACT Sustainability Policy
People Place Prosperity: a policy for sustainability in the ACT
On 27 March 2003, the Chief Minister launched People Place Prosperity: a policy for sustainability in the ACT. This document is the ACT Government’s policy commitment to sustainability.
The policy describes the sustainability principles that the ACT Government will incorporate into its systems and operations. It commits the ACT Government to:
- embedding sustainability within its decision-making processes;
- promoting sustainability to the wider community;
- developing partnerships for sustainability with the ACT community; and
- developing indicators and reporting regularly on progress.
People Place Prosperity also provides the philosophical underpinning for the development of The Canberra Plan, the ACT Government’s broad ranging and comprehensive framework for a sustainable future.

The development of People Place Prosperity is the culmination of a consultation process that began with the launch of the discussion paper Towards a Sustainable ACT, on 27 June 2002. The Office of Sustainability received forty-two submissions on the discussion paper, and additional comments were received through other consultation activities, including those linked to the Canberra Spatial Plan.
Although the period for submissions closed on 11 October 2002, the discussion paper still provides a good overview of the concept of sustainability and some of the major sustainability issues facing the ACT.
