Materials Recovery Facility and Resource Management Centre Open Days

An Open Day is an opportunity for the community to come along and see what happens to the contents of your household rubbish and recycling bins once they have been collected from your kerb.

Although this may not sound like an exciting trip, the presentations are engaging, fun and informative.

We cater for a wide range of groups throughout the year and offer Open Days as an opportunity for individuals and families to come along. The tours are most suited to ages 5 and up.

Each Open Day offers four separate one-hour tours. The first half of the tour is spent in the Materials Recovery Facility which deals with the contents of our household recycling bin. Visitors start in the education room which overlooks the sorting plant, acting as a viewing gallery. From here, and using live CCTV footage, visitors will see the delivery, sorting and baling of household recyclables. The tour guides will explain the process and give helpful tips on how to use the household recycling bin. Everyone will have an opportunity to ask questions they have about recycling at home.

The second half of the tour is a guided bus ride around the Resource Management Centre which accepts a wide range of household waste. The guides point out and discuss the range of reuse and recycling facilities available at the centre. The bus will take visitors as close as possible to the landfill tip face. Other topics covered include methane extraction and construction of the landfill. Everyone will have an opportunity to ask questions about their household waste.

A range of reference material is available for visitors to take with them, depending on what their interest is.
