Keeping a Dangerous Dog

What is a dangerous dog?

A dangerous dog is:

  • a dog that the Registrar of Dogs, located in Domestic Animal Services  has declared to be dangerous (usually because of attacking behaviour); or
  • a dog that has been declared dangerous in another State or Territory.

What do I need to do if my dog has been declared dangerous?

If your dog has been declared dangerous, you must apply for a Dangerous Dog Licence at Domestic Animal Services and pass an assessment conducted by Domestic Animal Services to keep the dog. Declared dangerous dogs must be kept in accordance with the conditions stated on the Dangerous Dog Licence.

The following information will be assessed when processing an Application to Keep a Dangerous Dog:

  • the type of dog
  • the size of the premises the dog is kept at
  • the security of the premises the dog is kept at
  • the adequacy of the facilities for keeping the dog
  • the likelihood of the dog causing any nuisance to neighbours.
