Do I need to identify my dog or cat?
Yes. It is compulsory for all dogs and cats in the ACT to wear some form of identification.
The minimum requirement for dog identification is for dogs to wear their original yellow registration tag. Additional identification can be provided by means of the dogs registration number tattooed in its ear or by means of microchipping.
All cat owners must identify their animals either by microchip, collar and tag, tattoo, or a combination of all three.
Is microchipping compulsory?
As at 1 May 2008 it will be compulsory for all dogs and cats to be microchipped at point of sale. A three year phasing in period has been granted for dogs already homed in the ACT. It will be compulsory for all dogs to be microchipped in the ACT by 30 April 2011. As at 1 May 2008 all cats in the ACT are to be microchipped.
Is microchipping a safe procedure?
Yes. Microchipping is a safe procedure that requires the insertion of a microchip, approximately the size of a grain of rice, into the back of the neck of the dog or cat. Few animals show any signs of discomfort during this simple and quick procedure.

Any veterinarian can perform this procedure.
How much does it cost?
The cost of microchipping will vary between different service providers.
