Charcoal Kiln Road

Charcoal Kiln Road is located in Kowen Forest and was named to commemorate the production of charcoal in the area during the Second World War. Ten charcoal burners functioned on the site of the Kowen School, which was in operation from 1882 to 1906. However, there is no remaining evidence of the school building.

The charcoal, made from red and yellow box wood, was converted to gas, which was used as a substitute fuel for petrol-starved cars during periods of rationing. There are surface remains of nine kilns. The kilns had a circular concrete base of about 4.5 m in diameter with a slightly raised rim. The brick walls were constructed in part from bricks used in the school, although almost all have now been removed.
