Equine Influenza

Current Situation:

Equine Influenza is no longer active in NSW, however we still need to be vigilant.

New South Wales and Queensland go Green and White

As of March 14, 2008, New South Wales and Queensland have downgraded zones to Green and White alert status.

For more information about these areas please see the NSW DPI (External Link)and QLD DPI (External Link)websites.

What does this mean?

To move a horse from anywhere in the white to anywhere in a green zone you will only need the relevant movement statement or waybill.

Current ACT Equine Movement Statement requirements are:

  • Recreational Horse Riding within the ACT, riders do not require an Equine Movement Statement.
  • Transporting or moving a horse by vehicle within the ACT still requires an Equine Movement Statement.
  • If you are going to attend a registered event either lead or riding or transporting horse by vehicle you will still require an Equine Movement Statement.

National agreements on horse movements now permits movement  between the various quarantine zones, however stringent conditions apply. For more specific information refer to the QLD DPI (External Link)web site.

Horse owners are reminded they still need to carry appropriate movement statements when moving their horse by vehicle. Authorised TAMS personnel and vehicle inspectors are conducting mobile patrol of roads and will be conducting random checks.

Anyone who has any contact with horses has a responsibility to help stop the spread of EI. It is essential for people to continue to follow recommended biosecurity procedures. In particular: shower and change into clean clothes and footwear and blow nose thoroughly after contact with a horse, even if the animal is showing no flu symptoms or has been vaccinated. All equipment which comes into contact with horses must be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected after each use.
