Managing and Maintaining Canberra's Public Treescape

The city of Canberra is renowned as the premier Garden City of Australia.  Extensive public tree plantings in the city contribute to our ‘bush capital’ image.  Trees in Canberra are an essential part of the landscape; they provide shelter, add to heritage significance, supply havens for wildlife, add tremendously to the aesthetic appeal of the nation’s capital and increase property values.  Early plantings of urban trees commenced around 1910. Examples include Haig Park, City Hill, Acton, Weston Park, the Parliamentary Triangle, Telopea Park and various inner Canberra suburbs. Today, it is estimated there are 210,000 trees in residential streets and a further 440,000 trees in urban parks, along major road verges and in other urban open space.  Native trees comprise about 40% of the total tree population.
