In June 2004, Mr Jon Stanhope MLA, Minister for the Environment, released the final report of the Review of the Environment Protection Act 1997 and the Role of the Environment Protection Authority.
The report is available for download. It fulfils the government’s commitment to review the Environment Protection Authority (the Authority), considering the level of resources required by the Authority to carry out its functions and options for increasing the independence of that office. It also fulfils the statutory requirement for review of the operation of the Act.
The review shows that the Environment Protection Act has been operating well and that the Authority has successfully implemented the aims of the Act, ensuring that high levels of compliance with the Act were being achieved in the ACT.
The report contains 51 proposals for reform of the Act and the way in which it is administered. Overall, the proposals are about building on successful initiatives and technical changes to improve the operation of the Act. Implementation of these proposals is now underway.
