Map Area
The Map area of the Map Page is where you will see the results of your selection of data layers and zoom actions. All activated layers will be symbolized according to the associated Legend and searched or selected features will be highlighted in RED. Some data layers also include labels to help you relate to the map view. These labels are drawn dynamically and display some of the information which is stored as attributes in these layers. This area of the Map Page also includes a North Arrow, ACT Copyright statement and a map scale bar, which provides you with a sense of the scale of your current view.

In this sample map view the road reserves are filled in light grey with the kerb lines superimposed as thin grey lines. The major roads pavements are depicted as pink lines and labelled with the road name. The blocks (land parcels) are the areas with a brown outline and the block number is in brown in the centre of each block. The street address numbers are the black numbers close to the road. An area of public open space is viewable on the right in light green, and footpaths and cycle paths are depicted in darker grey and charcoal respectively. The District (Suburb) boundaries are drawn as orange lines (centre of roads).
The large RED area is the result of a selection from the Search Page.
If a background has been selected and solid fill layers such as those in the ACT Base group have been unchecked for display, then you will also see the imagery in the Map area. This is depicted in the sample map below.

The background data is imagery acquired by satellite. For the DigitalGlobe imagery the resolution is 0.65 metres, therefore if you zoom in to enlarge the detail on your map you will begin to notice the imagery will go fuzzy. It is also difficult to display labels that display well on this background. As in the sample above, it is possible to display any of the data layers over the imagery. You must expect some variations in the accuracy of data provided through ACT Locate, due to the wide range of sources and capture methods for this data. The metadata that is provided with each data layer will help you assess which layers are more accurate. To view the metadata for a layer, left-click on the
tag next to the relevant data set in the Layer list.
The map area is also where you will interact with ACT Locate. For example whenever you zoom, pan, select by rectangle etc. you do so by mouse clicking on the map.
