ACT Locate

ACT Locate is an Internet mapping service created for the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Government. The development has been established by, and is managed by the Asset Information Systems Unit within the Department of Territory and Municipal Services (TAMS), with contract assistance provided by Geometry Pty Ltd. 

ACT Locate is built upon a mapping capability that enables visualisation of the information being sought by the user. There are two ways to access the system. The first is via a text search (Search & Locate) on one of 3 primary criteria; these being street address, land block details or place/feature name. The second is to start with a map Create a Map and select the area and scale of interest, along with the required layers of information. Users can also view a background image. Whichever method is used in the first instance, either can then be used to enhance or vary the information retrieved.

ACT Locate has been designed to suit both the novice and advanced user of interactive mapping interfaces. The most common search criteria are catered for on the Search Page. The related Map Page includes a basic toolset to enable a user to change the viewing scale or location; obtain information on all visible layers through the Identify Page measure distances; prepare a Print Page and obtain help information. An overview map helps in relating the current location to a whole of ACT view.

An advanced user can select an active layer and through an additional set of tools, obtain information on features in this layer only; zoom to just this layer; query, find or spatially select features within this layer; buffer selected records and select those from another layer based on the result.

ACT Locate has been developed on ESRI’s ArcIMS technology but also makes use of Geometry’s Exposure product to display .ECW imagery. Currently all spatial data is stored in Shape file format and aspatial files are in .DBF. All vector data is extracted from the Corporate Geographic Database which uses Oracle SDO Geometry and records data in both ACT Stromlo and MGA94 Zone 55 projections. The ACT Locate Shape files and imagery are in MGA94 Zone 55 only. All spatial layers are linked to the full ANZLIC Standard metadata available through the ACT Corporate Geographic Database. These display in a separate browser window or Metadata Page.
