Weston Park Master Plan

Weston Park, on the southern shores of Lake Burley Griffin, is a key destination in Canberra for both residents and visitors to the City. Over 720,000 people visit the park annually. The park contains structures and features of historical significance to the establishment of Canberra’s landscape including the English Garden, Hobdays Cottage, Yarralumla Nursery, and plantings by Thomas Weston, Lindsay Pryor and other well-known figures.

Weston Park is on the interim register of the ACT Heritage Places. On acceptance of the park to the register, a conservation management plan would be commissioned. Weston Park is on the Register of the National Estate.

Weston Park is used for informal gatherings and picnics as well as large scale sporting events such as cross country events, triathlons and fun runs.

The Weston Park Master Plan Report was undertaken by ACT Landscape, a division of Totalcare Industries in 1999. The document is now seen as dated and Parks, Conservation and Lands (PCL) have identified the need for a new master plan for the park to inform the development and management of the park over the next 5 to 10 years.

Parks, Conservation and Lands (PCL) commissioned a study to develop a new master plan for Weston Park. Landscape and master planners, Oxigen, has been selected to develop the master plan.

Stage 1 consultations focused on presenting information and listening to a diverse range of views from key stakeholders to inform the development of a draft master plan.

Stage 2 community consultation involved a public display held on Saturday 8 November 2008. The purpose of this display was to show the DRAFT master plan to Canberra residents. The draft plan was open to public comment which closed on Monday 8 December 2008.

Stage 3 Community Consultation

Public Information Session

The purpose of the public information session is to show the final DRAFT master plan to Canberra residents. The final draft plan has been prepared following consultation with key stakeholders and the general public.

Date: Saturday 27 June 2009
Time: 9:00 am to 11:00 am
Where: Yarralumla Shops, Corner Bentham and Novar Street, Yarralumla

The final draft Weston Park Master Plan is available for download below or alternately will be on display throughout the consultation period at Canberra Connect Shopfronts along with the Belconnen, Dickson, City, Woden and Tuggeranong Libraries.

TAMS is interested to hear your comment on the final draft master plan.  To share your thoughts on the final Draft Weston Park Master Plan please fill out the online feedback form by close of business Sunday 19 July 2009.

Heritage Note:
The master plan recognises that the site will require the preparation of a Conservation Management Plan (CMP) to ensure that the heritage significance of Weston Park and important components are well understood, respected and conserved in the context of known aspirations and constraints. A CMP will be required prior to commencement of capital works involving new developments (not including the upgrade of existing infrastructure).
