Community Consultation on Belconnen and Tuggeranong Skate Parks

Skate Park

Skaters have been telling Territory and Municipal Services (TAMS) that the Belconnen and Tuggeranong Skate parks need updating.  So TAMS have asked Convic Design to help us to come up with a concept plan for future improvements to the skate parks based on your wish list.

On a very soggy Monday 7 July, Parks Conservation and Lands (PCL) along with Darren White of CONVIC ran a community consultation on the draft plans and report for the Belconnen and Tuggeranong skate parks. Thank you to those who braved the weather and come out to talk to us.

Over the day we met with representatives of the Canberra Skateboarding Association, Shifty’s, Trilogy, Backbone BMX, Uturn, youth Coalition and Tuggeranong youth service as well as a handful of skaters and bmx riders at Belconnen skate park. Not surprisingly no-one braved the downpour to meet with us at Tuggeranong Skate Park. As CONVIC had come from Melbourne for the meeting we were not able to reschedule, but still believe the consultation was a success with some very useful information exchanged.

A few minor changes to the plans will be made as a result of the consultation with the final plans to be put on the TAMS website when completed.

A great part of the discussion focussed on what would be the priorities for skaters and bmx riders in applying for upgrade funding. Overwhelmingly those at the meetings thought that we should aim for creation of a new, large regional facility as a first priority followed by upgrade works at Belconnen. It was felt that it was better to wait for a major upgrade than to expend funds on undertaking the minor upgrades proposed for both the Tuggeranong and Belconnen parks, unless this minor work could be done soon and did not impact on the other options proceeding.
