Cotter Bush Picnic 2008

Each year we celebrate Australia Day in our own unique ways.

The Cotter Bush Picnic has been part of that celebration for the past four years running. 'Welcome Back Cotter' was originally staged in 2004 to celebrate the reopening of the Cotter reserve and in particular the bridge and playground built to replace those lost in the 2003 bushfire's.

For decades the Cotter has been much loved by Canberrans, especially in Summer so it seems fitting that for that one day each year we find our great Aussie spirit and celebrate Australia Day doing what is truly Australian, having a chance to lie back in the shade of big old gums trees whilst listening to music from an Aussie bush band; fighting the flies for the snags on the barby and playing cricket in the park with the kids. So this 'Australia Day 2008' has been enjoyed by many Canberra families and friends enjoying each others company here at the Cotter Reserve.

Australia Day, Saturday 26 January, is more than a public holiday - it's the day we come together as a nation to celebrate Australia and being Australian. So lets not forget some of the values we claim as Australians, understanding others, being considerate of people around us and acknowledging the need to be respectful of all Australians new and old alike.

Aussie, Aussie, Aussie! Oi, Oi, Oi!

This week’s photo is of the launch of the Give a Tree a Drink campaign which was held on the 19th December 2007.

Give a tree a drink launch

There are over 625,000 public trees in streets and parks in all over Canberra. The drought has been impacting on the health of many of these trees. As you can imagine it is a big task for the ACT Government to water all of these trees and we need help from the Canberra Community.

Minister for Territory and Municipal Services John Hargreaves MLA launched the Give a Tree a Drink campaign in Jansz Crescent Griffith. Jansz Cresent was chosen because the residents there have taken an active role in looking after thier street trees.

Anyone can water public trees. But remember to water only using non potable water (such as from the bath or shower or rinse cycle of the washing machine) and within current water restrictions.

To find out more about the campain and how you can help our public trees please visit the Give a Tree a Drink webpage

So go on, 'give a tree a drink'!

This week’s photos are of 'Lucky the koala' taken out at Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve last week.

Lucky is enjoying her retirement out at Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve.

Lucky and Phil (Wildlife Officer) have a great bond with each other, especially when Phil brings food.

Lucky won the hearts of Canberrans after Rangers from Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve found Lucky in the top of a tree six days after the Canberra firestorm burnt 99 per cent of the Reserve. She was the sole survivor from the koala enclosure at Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve. It is not known how Lucky survived, but it is thought that she may have taken refuge in a mountain creek, which flowed through the koala enclosure, before returning to the tree where she was found.

Lucky’s recovery has been slow and she has overcome some massive hurdles along the way. After spending several months in ‘intensive care’ at the National Zoo and Aquarium, Lucky moved back to Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve in October 2003.

Lucky was taken out of public view last year, and now enjoys the peace and quiet of retirement, along with a good selection of yummy eucalptus leaves.

Lucky you, Lucky!

This week’s photos are a timely reminder to the community to recycle.

Recycling Truck

When your recycling bin is emptied, the truck takes the material to the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) at Hume. The MRF uses the latest technology and human intervention to sort the recyclables.
