Educational tours of the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) and the Mugga Lane Landfill can be arranged for your group.

Materials Recovery Facility (MRF)

The Materials Recovery Facility at Hume enables ever-increasing quantities of recyclables to be sorted, bailed and then transported to recycling plants in NSW and Victoria where they are turned into products ranging from steel cans to road cones!

The Facility was built at a cost of $2.3 million and began operation in December 2003.  The levels of recycling sorted through the facility continue to rise, from around 2,500 tonnes of recyclables every month in 2004, to around 4000 tonnes per month in 2006.  The MRF uses advanced technology to sort recyclables collected from households and commercial businesses. For instance, plastic can be automatically separated from glass; and paper can be easily separated from all other materials.

The Facility also includes an Education Room to teach school groups, members of the community and international delegations about recycling and to promote initiatives of the No Waste Strategy.

Mugga Lane Landfill

Find out about what goes on at the Mugga Lane landfill, what the methane gas power plant is all about and how to "revolve" your waste. Tours can be designed to cater to all age groups. Bookings essential.
