Recycling trial at the Mitchell Resource Management Centre

ACT NOWaste and Thiess Services are conducting a trial at the Mitchell Resource Management Centre to increase recycling.

Map of the Mitchell Resource Management Centre and Transfer Station.

During this trial there will be dedicated bays for some of the different items in your load. By dropping your items in the right bay you can help us recycle more.

The above map shows where different items can be dropped off. Please park in front of each bay you have material for and safely unload into the bin provided.

Please follow signs and any directions from staff carefully and make sure your children remain inside your vehicle at all times.

  1. What's Happening at the Mitchell Resource Management Centre?

From February 2011, a recycling trial will be held at the Mitchell Resource Management Centre / Transfer Station.

When you deliver material at the Mitchell Resource Management Centre during the trial, you will be directed to a resource recovery area. You will be asked to unload different types of material into different bays so that the material can be recycled. Please follow signs and directions from staff. Make sure your children remain inside your vehicle at all times.

  2. Why is the recycling trial being run?

The trial will help reduce waste to landfill. It will also assist the ACT Government to design future contracts and facilities to maximise recycling. New contractual arrangements for Mitchell Resource Management Centre are expected to be in place later this year.

  3. Do I have to pay to recycle my material?

You will not be charged extra during the recycling trial. You will have to pay the usual landfill and recycling fees to deliver your material. For more information about fees Click Here.

  4. Will there be longer queues at the Mitchell Resource Management Centre?

Staff on site will minimise queuing. We do not expect longer-than-usual queues during the trial. Please follow signs and directions from staff to ensure that traffic flows smoothly.

  5. Is there anything I should do differently?

Ideally, you should load your vehicle so that it is easy to drop off recyclables. The easiest way to unload your vehicle on-site is to have your vehicle loaded in the following order (top to bottom):

    • Mattresses
    • Cardboard & paper
    • Reusable items
    • Timber & woody pruning
    • Metals
    • Cleanfill (clean soil)
    • Bricks, concrete & rubble
    • Mixed other waste

    Keep separate:

    • Tyres
    • Televisions & computers

  6. How can I provide feedback?

We welcome all feedback on this trial and will use comments to help us continually improve services and facilities. Comments are particularly helpful in 2011 as we are in the process of designing and implementing new contractual arrangements.

In particular, answers to the following questions will be helpful.

    • Did the recycling trial change the way you normally deliver material?
    • Were the facilities easy to use?
    • Did you encounter any problems during the trial?
    • Do you have any suggestions for ways to improve the recycling trial or facilities in future?
