What can go in the green (garbage) bin

Each household is supplied with a 140-litre green lidded wheelie bin for domestic garbage. Some newer bins are shorter than the original bins, but they have the same capacity. What to put in your garbage bin ( PDF PDF 726Kb ) explains what can be placed in your garbage bin.

Please only place household waste that cannot be recycled into the garbage bin.

DO NOT place the following in your garbage bin:

  • Recyclable materials
  • Garden waste
  • Rocks and soil
  • Hot ashes
  • Commercial, industrial or building waste
  • Dead animals
  • Solvents and oil

Putting Bins Out

Put bins out the night before, or by 7am on collection days. Please remove bins from the kerbside as soon as possible after they have been cleared.

Bins should be placed on the kerbside with the front of the bin facing the road and the wheels at the back. Leave a gap of at least 30 cm between bins so that the truck’s arms can pick each bin up.

To assist the trucks to safely access bins, avoid placing bins near trees, parked cars, poles or letter boxes and do not place them in driveways or other hazardous locations.

Do not overfill bins or place materials beside them - only material placed inside a bin will be collected.

Multi-Unit Development Collections

If you live in a multi-unit development your waste and recycling services may be different to other households in the same area. Multi-unit developments are provided with waste and recycling capacities which are determined by formulas set out in the Development Control Code ( PDF PDF 216Kb ) Additional capacity can be purchased by arrangement through the owner's corporation (body corporate).

Recycling:

Developments of more than 10 units usually have yellow-lidded hoppers or wheeled 240-litre bins for shared use. You can recycle the same materials as are listed above for households.

What to put in the Recycling Hopper or Bin (PDF PDF 390Kb) details the items that can be placed in the recycling bin.

Garbage:

If you live in a development of 10 or less units your garbage service will be the same as households in the surrounding suburb. You will have been allocated a green 140-litre green lidded wheelie bin which will be collected on the same day as other domestic households in your suburb. Please refer to the Collection Calendar 2008 ( PDF PDF 715Kb) for information about the service relevant to your area. Contact Cleanaway on (02) 6260 1547 for information about where to place wheelie bins for collection in your development.

Developments of more than 10 units are normally provided with a black-lidded Garbage Hopper. For collection information contact Cleanaway on telephone (02) 6239 2600.

What can go in the Garbage Bin or Hopper ( PDF PDF 726Kb) details what waste can be put in your bin or hopper. Please only place household waste that cannot be recycled into the garbage hopper or bin.
